Margaret Hilda Roberts (Margaret Thatcher) born on 13th October 1925 in Grantham, Lincolnshire was a daughter of a grocer Alfred Roberts and Beatrice Ethel Stephenson. Roberts earned a degree from the University of Oxford in Chemistry and her tutors can recall decent writing skills from her essays. She was good at general subjects and her first boyfriend Tony Bray remembers she was a very thoughtfull and a great conversationalist. Her coursework also focused on subjects beyond chemistry and she was already contemplating an entry into law and politics. She was influenced by the political work of Friedrich Hayek 'The Road to Serfdom' (1944) which criticised economic intervention by government - a precursor to an authoritarian socialist, later communist state. 'People are freer in a less corrupted democracy where the power of state is reduced and where everyone can keep most if not all of their income.'
